We can be the stranger who comes to town."
MARY MORRIS
In March, my friend Carol and I took a trip to Montpellier, which is the capital city of Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. We were blessed with blue skies and sunshine and were entranced by this friendly and welcoming university town.
We loved the Musee Fabre with its extensive art collection from ancient to very modern, the vast Place de la Comedie, the wide tree line esplanades and the narrow winding streets of the old town with the bustling market square.
We stayed in an elegant and sumptuously furnished 18th century 'Hotel Particulier', that was situated in the heart of the ancient historic town .
Wow! First impressions are very good.
We love the elegant lounge with rich burgundy
silk brocade sofas and antique marble fireplace.

Traditional interior furnishings and original stone flooring.
Beautiful reception rooms on an almost regal scale...
We couldn't wait to be shown to our room....
Carol checking out our impressively palatial room while I wander
around aimlessly taking photographs...
Our room is so huge that one evening I decide to measure it...
this is fine until it gets to the height.
Carol is tall but if she stands on a chair and I stand on her shoulders...
More exploring in the morning.
This is where our private petit dejeuner is served...

On nothing but the best antique silver.
This was Carol's chocolate pot.

After a breakfast we went exploring the old town...
With its narrow winding cobbled streets...
I took lots of photos of the signs...
And another...
And another...
An antique lantern with a helping hand.
Carol window shopping.
I'm still taking photos... I love the pink suede high heeled boots
but pretended I was taking the photo of the French man in his beret...
Amazing cars for sale outside a tiny toy shop.
A beautiful sculpture in the window of an art shop.
Shiny satin fabric bunting in shades of crimson, shocking pink, coral and deep purple...
Then we came across these amazing mannequins...
That made us smile...
And this wonderful old epicerie that had
been in the same place for over 110 years.
Although Carol is happy window shopping
she is happiest actually shopping...
We found some quiet relaxing parts of the
old town on our way to the Musee Fabre.
old town on our way to the Musee Fabre.
Where you could just sit and read or just be...
So we stopped for tea...
Because neither of us drinks coffee...
The next day we are off walking again.
We loved the formal boulevard of bare deciduous trees.

Ancient monuments, avenues of trees and shadows...
We come across a market in a little square
selling fruit and vegetables and other fresh produce.
We loved the perfect, globe-shaped spring cabbages arranged in rows...

The artichokes were so pretty...
And the spicy French saucisson is so, well French...
The lemons looked good with their stalks and leaves intact.
Then I started noticing posters...
And another one...
And graffiti...
Then we come across a square where all the bollards are painted...
Each one is unique...
More bollard art...
And just one more...
Another day another square. It was filled with the most beautiful trees heavily laden with creamy caramel coloured berries. The colour combination of the berries against the butter coloured stonework of the houses and the pale blue paintwork was exquisite. (I don't know the name of the trees though).
I loved those berries...
But maybe I took too many photos of them...
